Many Christians consider the music of the Irish band U2 among the most spiritual in rock. That’s one reason organizers at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newnan are planning a church service using the band’s music.

The church will host a “U2 Eucharist,” Sunday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. featuring several songs from the band. The purpose of the event is to raise money through collections for ONE, the Campaign to Make Poverty History, a cause supported by Bono, U2’s lead singer.

Randy Winton, youth minister at St. Paul’s, is organizing the event.

Half of the money collected at St. Paul’s on Jan. 28 will go toward the charity Episcopal Relief and Development, which is working to realize the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)to eradicate extreme poverty and AIDS.

“Much of U2’s music is explicitly Christian and really well suited for a worship service, even if some people might need time to get used to the idea,” Winton said.

According to St. Paul’s associate rector Hunt Priest, All Saint’s Episcopal in Atlanta had a U2 Eucharist several months ago. “They had planned for 300 worshippers, and instead had 500. We’re not sure what to expect for Newnan, but we’re planning for a great evening,” Priest said.

St. Paul’s is located at 576 Roscoe Road in Newnan.
