SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (January 19, 2007) — The Georgia Hunters for the Hungry (GHFTH) is a program through which deer, donated by hunters, become nutritious venison to benefit those who need it the most.

In 2006, participating hunters were able to donate at any of seven processor collection sites during Sept. 9, 2006 - Jan. 1, 2007, and at seven two-day collection sites hosted on the weekend of Nov. 25-26, 2006.

Collections totaled almost 29,000 pounds of venison — the highest amount of pounds ever collected in one year by this program. In total, hunters have donated almost 200,000 pounds of venison since the inception of this program in 1993.

“I am so impressed with the outstanding effort made by hunters who participated in the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program,” says WRD Director Dan Forster. “The amount of meat donated this year to this program will make more than 112,000 meals for people who are most in need of nutrition. Our agency is very proud to be a partner in this program.”

All hunters who participated in the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program have their name entered into a drawing for a deer rifle, sponsored by the Georgia Wildlife Federation.

GHFTH Sponsors are: Georgia DNR/Wildlife Resources Division, Georgia Wildlife Federation, Georgia Department of Corrections, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia’s Outdoor Adventures and the Georgia State Association of Food Banks.
