The City of Peachtree City has forms available for qualifying senior citizens to register for the 2007 senior homestead exemption.

The annual exemption, which applies to Peachtree City homeowners age 65 and over who earn less than $30,000 per year, was approved by voters in November 2005. The deadline to file for 2007 is 5 p.m. Thursday, March 1.

The exemption is a flat rate of $5,000 per home, which would amount to a $26.00 savings in city property taxes under the city’s current millage rate. Homeowners must apply annually to receive the exemption for that year.

Qualifying Peachtree City homeowners must be age 65 by January 1 of this year and must already have applied for the standard homestead exemption through the Fayette County Tax Commissioner’s Office. The household income will be calculated on the Federal Adjusted Gross Income of the applicant and spouse – this may include Social Security earnings, depending on the applicant.

Qualifying seniors should bring proof of age and, if ready, a copy of their 2006 tax returns, to City Hall, 151 Willowbend Road, in Peachtree City to file for the exemption.

Because the deadline to file taxes is April 15, the City will continue to accept proof of income through April 19, 2007, for those who met the registration deadline of March 1.

“Last year, almost 200 residents were able to take advantage of the program,” said city spokesperson Betsy Tyler. “We just want to remind everyone that they must register annually to continue receiving the exemption.”
