Christian City’s annual ‘Gala’ fundraiser set for Valentine’s weekend

When Christian City celebrates progress, it celebrates in a grand way that brings people from all walks of life together. On Feb. 10, 1,000 guests will gather on Valentine’s Day weekend for a “black-tie optional” Gala that will include an elegant dinner, dancing to music arranged by Laigh Langley, and many “special surprises.” The event will be held at the Georgia International Convention Center in the International Ballroom and begins at 6 p.m. with a reception. An auction also is planned.

Dignitaries, developers, volunteers, donors, families, members of churches and friends will attend to honor 14 builders and visionaries known throughout the Atlanta area and the southeastern United States for their commitment and financial support toward building a new Children’s Village at Christian City. These special friends of children and of Christian City, will receive the distinguished Builder’s Legacy Award during the evening’s ceremonies. Invitations are open to the community but seating is limited.

Dr. Byron and Rose Marie Harper of Fayette County, cofounders of Christian City in 1962, will serve as honorary chairpersons. The Gala will celebrate the achievements of the Harpers and others who have contributed to Christian City’s progress “on the path to the new Children’s Village.” The past two years have been punctuated by dramatic advancements at the 30-acre Village site. Notable builders and developers have given their time and money toward the project where streets and foundations are in place and actual cottage construction is finally underway.

The Children’s Village will be a secure campus located on the back of Christian City’s 500 acres in Union City. It will eventually include up to 12 cottages and an administration/training facility for Christian City’s Children’s Services division. This New Children’s Village will replace the original cottages that have served as safe, secure residential housing for more than 1,000 children over the past 40 years. Christian City has a plan to retrofit the existing cottages into residential homes for the developmentally disabled or those lovingly referred to as “adult children.”

This year’s Christian City Gala is, in fact, a fundraiser, but it also celebrates the progress children experience in their lives when they come to Christian City. The success stories are many, as children who at one time may have been abandoned or abused, grow into responsible adults making their own contribution to the community.

“We are celebrating more than just buildings and bricks,” says Bob Crutchfield, president and CEO of Christian City. “We are celebrating happiness, healing and much more that occurs one day, one moment … one life at a time. These children deserve more than we can give them!”

Tickets are $125 and can be purchased by phoning Christian City, 770-703-2636. Those wishing to attend also may buy tickets on line by accessing www.christiancity.org. Christian City is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization. Tax deductible sponsorship opportunities are available and donations of auction items are still welcomed.
