Contractors plan to start today on the demolition and replacement of a bridge on Ga. Highway 85 north of Fayetteville.

Because of the work, northbound traffic at the Morning Creek bridge will be routed onto the southbound bridge, according to officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation. That could lead to traffic slowdowns during peak traffic times, as the southbound bridge will be limited to one lane of traffic in each direction.

The project, north of The Pavilion shopping center and about a mile south of the Clayton County line, is expected to take more than nine months and possibly longer if weather or other unforeseen delays occur, officials said.

The DOT asks motorists to use extreme caution when driving through this work zone.

“We request your patience and cooperation, and apologize for inconveniences caused by our work,” said Barry Hancock, DOT communications specialist. “We realize that traffic interruptions are not welcomed, but to improve our roadways, construction and maintenance are necessary.”
