The third annual Fayette County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade is this Saturday. The annual parade, which is a celebration of the birthday and holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. begins at 10 a.m. at Fayette County High School in Fayetteville, Ga.

“The goal in the planning for this year’s parade is to make it the best in the entire metropolitan Atlanta,” said Reverend Ed Johnson, chairman of the Parade Committee and president of the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP.

“We want to invite everyone who wishes to participate in the parade to celebrate the diversity and unity of the Fayette County community.”

All local churches, regardless of its congregation’s racial demographics or denomination, are cordially invited to enter floats, automobiles, or marching units in the parade. Awards will be given to the top three entries in five categories, hoping to inspire creativity in each unit’s parade entries. The entry fee is $25. All organizations interested in participating in the parade should call 770-460-9934 to obtain a parade entry form and more information.

Reverend Johnson and the parade committee have worked to confirm the participation of local and regional politicians, including State Sen. Valencia Seay, State Rep. Virgil Fludd, State Rep. Roberta Abdul Salaam and Fayette County Schools Superintendent Dr. John DeCotis.

The committee is also looking forward to the participation of Sandy Creek High School and Martin Luther King, Jr. bands, the members of Omega Psi Phi and Jack and Jill of America. They are diligently working to extend the list of celebrities and politicians for the event.

“The continued objective, from the very first parade, is to bring all of Fayette County together in harmony in the effort to celebrate and demonstrate belief in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s philosophy of racial equality and brotherly love for all mankind,” said Rev. Johnson.
