Teams try to start the new year off on the right footWed, 01/10/2007 - 9:20am

The region basketball schedule resumed last weekend and several teams picked up two wins. Fayette County’s boys and girls swept Banneker and Northgate. The boys (10-4, 5-1 region) beat Banneker on Friday 59-43. A three point lead heading into the fourth quarter grew when the Tigers outscored the Trojans 22-9. David Millaud scored 19 points and had seven steals, while Derrick Walker chipped in 14 points. Against Northgate on Saturday, Fayette County picked up a 64-25 win. Quincy Carruthers scored 10 points and Josh Rape and Brandon Boykin both added nine. The Lady Tigers (8-4, 5-1 region) beat Banneker 53-32. Kristene Walker scored 22 points and Tessah Holt added nine. In their 40-24 win over Northgate on Saturday, Walker scored 12 points, Anna Onyeuku added eight and Holt scored seven. Whitewater’s boys (10-5, 5-2 region) won their games against Northgate, 55-33 and Starr’s Mill, 55-28. Against the Vikings, Kevin Leewallen scored 17 points, while Zach Scurry scored 11 points and recorded 14 rebounds and Stephen Sargent had 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks against Starr’s Mill. The Lady Wildcats (3-12, 1-6 region) fell to Northgate on Friday 51-49 with Lacey McGowan leading the way with 11 points. They picked up their first region win on Saturday though, defeating the Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers 53-44. McGowan scored 14 points, Cortney Walker added 12 points and Marissa Williams scored 10 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. Whitewater will host Banneker on Friday. Starr’s Mill played at Northgate last night and will host Fayette County on Friday. The boys have a record of 1-14, 0-6 region and the girls have a record of 6-9, 2-4. Sandy Creek’s Lady Patriots (10-2, 3-1 region) won both their games over the weekend, defeating region opponent Cass 40-31 on Friday and edging out Newnan 47-45 on Saturday. They are ranked ninth in the most recent GaSports.com coaches poll. The boys (8-4, 2-2 region) lost to Cass on Friday 77-68 in double overtime and then edged out Newnan 54-53 on Saturday. Sandy Creek hosted Haralson County last night and will host Central, Carroll on Friday before traveling to McIntosh on Saturday. Our Lady of Mercy’s boys and girls both got two wins over the weekend. On Friday, the boys (10-3, 1-2 region) beat non-region opponent Pike County 82-59 and then got a region win over Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy on Saturday 62-54. The Lady Bobcats beat Pike County 62-49 on Friday behind 16 points from Raven Moore and 15 points from Camille Thompson. On Saturday, they defeated the Lady Chargers 54-42. Moore scored 18 points and recorded three assists, three steals and five rebounds, while Alex Miles scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds and Kelly Tolcher added 10 points and nine rebounds. Our Lady of Mercy (8-5, 1-2 region) played at Landmark Christian last night and will take on W.D. Mohammed on the road on Friday before hosting Greenforest Christian on Saturday. As for teams with only one game last weekend, Landmark’s boys and girls split with Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy and McIntosh got swept by Woodward Academy. Landmark’s boys (2-11,0-2 region) lost a close one, 57-55, while the Lady War Eagles (13-2, 2-1 region) won 62-39. The team had a 32-18 lead over the Lady Chargers at the half. Diamond Hunnicutt scored 19 points, while Christian Hunnicutt added 17 and Tiffany Hall added 14. McIntosh’s girls (9-4, 4-3) lost to Woodward 56-28 and the boys (5-8, 2-5) lost 52-50. They hosted Westlake last night and will play at Northgate on Friday before hosting Sandy Creek on Saturday. login to post comments |
