Basketball teams stay active during Christmas vacation

The holiday tournaments continued last week and Fayette County’s boys improved to 8-4 on the season with wins over Luella and McIntosh in the Luella tournament. The Tigers defeated Luella 74-44 and got 24 points from Noel Johnson, 15 points, six assists and three steals from Brandon Boykin and 11 points and 20 rebounds from Derrick Walker. Quincy Carruthers also scored 11 points. In their 70-55 win over the Chiefs, Johnson scored 20 points and Boykin scored nine points, pulled in 10 rebounds and added seven assists and five steals, while Walker scored 16 points, Carruthers added 12 points and Terrance Turner scored 10 points and pulled in 11 rebounds.

McIntosh defeated Towers 60-53 in the opening game of the tournament. Johnson was the tournament MVP and Boykin made the All-Tournament team, as did McIntosh’s Vaughn Page.

The Lady Chiefs (9-3) went 1-1 in the tournament, losing to Towers 37-36 and defeating Luella 48-45.

Fayette County will host Banneker on Friday, while McIntosh will play at Woodward Academy.

Whitewater’s boys went 2-1 in the Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy tournament, improving their record to 8-5. The Wildcats opened with a 62-42 win over Heritage with Jay Bright scoring 18 points, Zach Scurry adding 11 points and 10 rebounds and Grant Mannion scoring 10 points. Whitewater lost their next game, 58-45 to Stockbridge. Stephen Sargent scored 17 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. In the final game of the tournament, against Alcovy, Whitewater got a 52-39 win. Bright scored 17 points, recorded five assists and was named to the All Tournament team. Kevin Lewallen added 11 points, Scurry chipped in 10 and Sargent scored eight points and had 14 rebounds.

The Lady Wildcats (2-11) went 1-2 in the tournament, falling to Heritage 63-47 and Landmark Christian 58-36 before beating Ola 56-33.

Whitewater will host Northgate on Friday and Starr’s Mill on Saturday.

Starr’s Mill (1-13) went 0-3 in the second annual Hoops Classic at Alexander High School, losing to Hiram 77-30, Westside, Macon 65-37 and East Paulding 60-42. The Lady Panthers (6-8) were off last week.

Landmark Christian’s boys (1-10) played in the Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy tournament and lost to Stockbridge 79-48 and Heritage 68-58.

The Lady War Eagles (12-2) went 2-1 in the tournament losing to Stockbridge 45-36 before their win over Whitewater. In their final game of the tournament they defeated Fellowship Christian 46-10. Christian Hunnicutt had 17 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in the Stockbridge game. Against Whitewater, Hunnicutt scored a season high 28 points, while adding six rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Tiffany Hall added 17 points in the win, which also happened to be Coach Jim Waller’s 450th of his career. In the game against Fellowhsip Christian, Hunnicutt scored 25 points and was named to the All Tournament team.

Landmark will host Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy on Friday.

Our Lady of Mercy’s boys (8-3) went 3-0 at the David Brainerd Christian School Invitational winning 77-19 over Cleveland Christian, 77-42 over David Brainerd and 81-60 over Lookout Valley.

The Lady Bobcats (6-5) went 2-1 in the tournament, losing to Sale Creek 57-50 but beating David Brainerd 69-45 and Lookout Valley 71-36. Camille Thompson was named to the All Tournament team. She averaged 17 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game and 4.4 steals per game. Raven Moore averaged 13.3 points per game, 5.8 steals per game and 4.2 assists per game.
Coach Clay Cushman also praised the play of Kely Tolcher, Hannah Allen, Andrea Trimble and Alex Miles, as well as Katie Bischoff, Darrian Linton and Amanda Keuler off the bench. They will host Pike County on Friday.

Sandy Creek’s boys and girls did not play in a tournament last week. The girls are 8-2 and the boys are 7-3. Sandy Creek will host Cass on Friday and Newnan on Saturday.
