St. Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Church of Peachtree City will have its Fourth Annual Vasilopita, or St. Basil’s Day Celebration this weekend. St. Basil was one of the forefathers of the Greek Orthodox Church and is remembered for his kindness and gift-giving to children. The event features food, fellowship, a live auction, Greek music and dancing at the Fayette Family YMCA on Huiett Rd. on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 6 until 10:30 p.m. The Rev. Fr. George Tsahakis will direct the blessing and cutting of the homemade loaves of bread, which contain silver coins. Persons receiving the coins are considered blessed throughout the year. Remaining loaves will be auctioned for the benefit of the Academy of St. Basil in Garrison, N.Y., philanthropy of the Philoptochos Society. There is no admission fee, but everyone is asked to bring a vegetable, side dish or dessert and all donations for St. Basil’s Academy are welcome.
