Cecil Howell Travis

Cecil Howell Travis, 93, died Dec. 16,2006. He was born Aug. 8, 1913 in Fayette County, son of James B. and Ada Travis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hubbard Travis, whom he married on Sept. 12, 1942, and a son, Tony Travis. He was a graduate of Fayette County High School in 1930, playing shortstop for its baseball team. A fellow teammate, Floy Farr, who played first base, died this past September 29, leaving Wilson Burch as the last 1930 class member. He was drafted by the Chattanooga Lookouts Minor League Baseball team in 1932. His major league debut was with the 1933 Washington senators. His lifetime batting average was .314. He was a three-time All-Star game player during his 12 year career. Putting aside his baseball career he enlisted in the United States Army. During his service in World War II, he was awarded the Purple Heart, three battle stars and one bronze star. Upon returning home from the war, he was a scout for the Washington Senators. In 1975 he was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Ring of Honor in R. F. K. Stadium. He was recently nominated for the 2007 Baseball Hall of fame. Services were at the Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. J. W. Wallis officiating. Interment was at Crest Lawn Cemetery, Atlanta. Survivors include sons, Mike and Linda Travis, and Ricky R. Travis, all of Fayette County; and Kris Travis, Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Christian City Convalescent Center, 7300 Lester Road, Union City, GA 30291. Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, Peachtree City, was in charge.
