Police searching for Hwy. 74 bank robber

Fairburn Police are seeking an armed gunman in the Dec. 19 robbery at the Bank of Georgia on Ga. Highway 74 and Milam Road.

Fairburn Det. Ben Pace said a man wearing a black jacket, dark pants and an orange toboggan entered the bank’s front entrance at approximately 11:27 a.m. The man was described as a white male with dirty blond hair in his late 20s to mid-30s, 5’5”-5’8” in height and weighing 120-140 pounds, Pace said.

He walked up to a teller, initially saying he wanted to open an account. He followed that statement by showing the teller a gun positioned in the waistband of his pants, Pace said. He then told the teller to give him cash, all in large bills, said Pace. The man also cautioned the teller against including any dye packs with the money, adding that if she activated an alarm he would shoot her in the face.

The teller said that throughout the robbery the man was very cordial and extremely calm, Pace said.

After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash the man walked out the front door then ran across Milam Road to the small shopping center at the corner of Hwy. 74. It is possible that he entered a gold colored vehicle and left the area, Pace said.

No one was injured during the robbery, said Pace.

A Fairburn officer was in the area when the alarm company called in the robbery. The officer arrived at 11:28 a.m. but could not locate the man.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was called, supplying dogs from the K-9 unit and a large number of patrol units. We received overwhelming assistance from the Fayette Sheriff, Pace said.

Matching what witnesses had reported, the dogs followed the man’s scent from the teller counter to an area behind the shopping center where the gold colored car had been parked.

Pace said investigators are working with video footage that seems to be favorable solving the crime. Anyone with information relating to this robbery is asked to contact Det. Ben Pace at (770) 964-1441.
