Visitors approaching Tyrone on Ga. Highway 74 will soon see new offices sprouting up on the busy corridor.

The Tyrone Town Council Thursday night approved a 45 acre rezoning for a tract on Ga. Highway 74. The tract is the first property in Tyrone approaching the town from Fairburn on Hwy.74.

Lauren Hansford, who represented property owner Danny Campbell and attorneys Dillard and Gallaway, told the town’s leaders that the plan had been modified since it was initially brought before the board two months ago.

The front of the property facing Hwy.74 will be office space and could ultimately house the headquarters for Scarbrough Development.

“I think this proposal is much more palatable to the council,” she said.

Hansford agreed to the restrictions in the Hwy.74 Overlay District, which stipulates that all four sides of the building facing the road must have at least 80 percent of the surface built of stone, glass or brick.

The council approved rezoning the tract from Agricultural residential to Office Institutional and M-1 Light Manufacturing by a 4-1 vote, with Councilman Mike Smola voting against the measure. The manufacturing part of the rezoning will be on the back of the property that does not face the road.

In other news, the town rejected the donation of a 1.1 acre tract in Magnolia Farms. Owner Joel Cowan Sr. wanted to donate the property to the town so it could be used for greenspace, but the town council would have none of it.

One of the main concerns, according to Councilman Grace Caldwell, would be having the property removed from the tax rolls.

“That would be two tax increases from the county and the town. Even if it’s a penny, it’s a tax increase,” she said.

The taxes on the property each year is about $400 to the county and $30 to the town.
