The winds of change continue to blow around the Union Station area along Ga. Highway 138. A rezoning request to transition 30.74 acres near Goodson Road and Goodson Connector from General Commercial and Light Industrial to Town Center Mixed Use won approval Dec. 19 from Union City council members.

Owner Goodson Investments LLC plans to develop Union Square, a mixed use development consisting of 163 townhouses, approximately 43,000 square feet of retail space, an amphitheater and several retail outparcels.

The largely undeveloped property is located south of Hwy. 138 across from the intersection of Jonesboro Road. The property is bordered on the west by Goodson Road and continues eastward to the rear of Shannon Square Shopping Center.

Mayor Ralph Moore said development plans should provide a pedestrian-friendly environment.

City planning staff recommended approval, noting that the property has not developed industrially. Conforming with the Future Land Use Plan that calls for commercial use, Community Development Director Ann Lippmann said the commercial portion of the site will be located near Hwy. 138, the city’s main commercial district. The townhouses will serve as a good transition between the commercial area and the manufactured home park south of the site, she said.

Union City Planning Commission unanimously recommended the rezoning at the Nov. 27 meeting.
