Lawrence W. McAlpine Jr., 83, Peachtree City, died Dec. 5, 2006. He was born in Passaic, N. J. but lived most of his life in Savannah, Ga. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Lois Lanier McAlpine. He was retired from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad after 40 years. The last 14 years of his employment, he was General Chairman for the Railway Carmen's Union. He was in the United States Coast Guard Reserves from 1942 to 1946 and saw a lot of action in the Atlanta and Pacific theaters and was in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. He was a member of Whitefield United Methodist Church, Savannah, for over 50 years where he was a Sunday School teacher, a Methodist Youth Fellowship counselor, and head of the Pastor-Parrish committee for many years. He was also a Methodist Lay Preacher. He moved to Peachtree City in 2005. He was known as "Mr. Mac" to many Peachtree City residents who would go by on the Lake Peachtree cart path and wave at him as he sat on his patio every day. He would give popsicles to children whose moms would bring them up to say "Hello." Services were at the Fox and Weeks Funeral Home chapel, Savannah, with his grandson, the Rev. Chris Davis officiating. Survivors include a son, Larry and Janice McAlpine, Savannah; daughters, Lois and Henry Higgins, Acworth, and Lucie and Lee Davis, Peachtree City, and Laurette Edenfield, Sharpsburg; a brother, George McAlpine, Carey, N.C.; sisters, Josephine Hanly, Solvang, Calif., and Teddy Ronan, Oxnard, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Carl J. Mowell & Son were in charge of local arrangements.
