A Fayetteville man is facing numerous criminal charges, some relating to bilking thousands of dollars from persons in his Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

Darryl Bradley Segraves, 54, of Turnberry Circle, is charged with two counts of forgery in the first degree and two separate theft counts, all totaling $288,000, according to Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard.

Segraves told some victims that he had a buyer already lined up for land in Fayette County and that he needed cash to fund certificates of deposit so the transaction could take place, Ballard said. But the money was not used to purchase the CDs because they had already been funded, Ballard said.

In one transaction, Segraves told the victim the money would be used to purchase the land, but such transaction never took place, Ballard said.

Segraves also used forged land purchasing agreements on two occasions in December 2005, according to arrest warrants filed in connection with the case, Ballard said.

It is not clear where all the money went, although some of it went into Segraves’ personal account, Ballard noted.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation on the case and there may be additional charges, Ballard said. A separate charge of deposit account fraud has also been filed against Segraves because he wrote a phony $100,000 check, Ballard added.

Segraves has not yet been indicted, but the case is expected to be presented to a grand jury in March, Ballard said.
