Approximately 100 pounds of chocolate has been sent to troops fighting in Iraq as a token of appreciation from Fayette’s school bus drivers and transportation staff.

Three individuals in different areas have volunteered to receive the chocolate and distribute it soldiers on Christmas day. The school system’s transportation department started sending chocolate gifts to the troops three years ago. Since then, approximately 300 pounds of chocolate has been distributed.

“We have received many letters of thanks. Most all of the individuals spoke about how much it means that we give our time and effort to show our support,” says bus driver Linda Mosley who helped organize the chocolate drive.

Sending chocolate at the holidays is not the only way the transportation department shows its support. Every spring a cookout is held to raise funds to purchase phone cards and care packages to send to local soldiers in Iraq. March 14 will mark the fifth cookout hosted by the department.

Anyone who knows someone or has a family member in the military is asked to mail the soldier’s name and address, along with a local contact name and telephone number (in case a package is returned), to Troops, Transportation, 210 Stonewall Avenue, Fayetteville, GA 30214. The deadline to submit names and addresses is March 30.
