Union City Council Nov. 21 approved the submission of a grant application for a state and federally-funded recreational trails program to help develop a planned greenway in the Union Station area.

The city currently owns approximately two-thirds of an estimated 10-15 acres in the Union Station area, formerly known as Shannon Mall, that is proposed to become pedestrian-oriented greenway area.

Awarded annually, the grant program carries a $100,000 maximum with a 20 percent local match.

The recreational trail grant would be part of the overall revitalization of the expansive Union Station area, including property from I-85 at the former Shannon Mall and continuing west to the Wal-mart area. The city is exploring the possibility of utilizing revenues from the recently established Tax Allocation District to acquire the remainder of the land for the greenway and/or to compliment the grant funds on the design and construction of the trail, said City Administrator Terrell Jacobs.

Council members approved the $6,000 grant application expenditure, giving the go ahead to Bron Cleveland Associates (BCA) to prepare an application for federal Highway Administration program administered by Ga. Dept. of Natural Resources. If successful in obtaining the grant BCA will manage the project.
