Peachtree City residents who failed to pay their annual stormwater fee will face a 27 percent surcharge if they don’t take care of the matter soon.

Starting in January, the city will hand over the unpaid bills to a collection agency which will charge a collection fee equal to 27 percent of the bill. The City Council voted Thursday night to enter an agreement with the collection agency, Revenue Discovery Systems, to handle the stormwater bill collections.

Under the contract, the city would still get the full amount of the bills once they are paid. The annual bills range between $32 and $72 a year depending on the amount of impervious space on the lot.

The bills were sent out in March and were due May 1.

Councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford asked if staff had considered publishing a list of the persons who hadn’t paid their stormwater bill yet. She was told no.

Janet Camburn, assistant finance director, said the city will be working on checking the bill database to make sure the correct persons were billed under the system.

The city was required by state regulators to assume stormwater system maintenance. Stormwater systems are used to divert water from storms to prevent property damage and injury.

The city has been creating a priority list of stormwater improvements, but it will not pay to fix stormwater problems on private property, officials have said.
