Starting Friday, law enforcement agencies in Georgia will join together to combat drunk and impaired drivers over the holidays.

The crackdown, called Operation Zero Tolerance, features more than 500 local police and sheriff’s deputies working with the Georgia State Patrol. Sobriety checkpoints will be set up and concentrated patrols will be operated on state roads and interstates.

According to Bob Dallas, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the risk of a driver dying in a crash with a blood alcohol content of .08 is at least 11 times higher than a person who is not impaired. A person with a BAC of .08 will have diminished critical driving skills including braking, steering, lane changing, judgement and response time, Dallas said.

The crackdown will run through Monday, Jan. 1, covering the New Year’s Eve holiday.
