Robert K. Finnell Jr., 85, Fayetteville, died Nov. 30, 2006. He was born Feb. 25,1921 in Walton County, Ky. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Brad. He was an outstanding athlete at Dixie High School, where he was named first team All-State quarterback, honorable mention All-Southern team and was quarterback of the East Kentucky team in the first East-West Shrine All-Star game played in Kentucky. His jersey was retired by Dixie High School in 1991. He had a total of 12 varsity letters, and signed a football scholarship with the University of Kentucky. He was inducted into the Northern Kentucky High School Athlete Directors Hall of Fame and Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. During World War Ii, he served in the United States Army as a member of the 30th Division of the First Army. Coming ashore on Omaha Beach on June 11, 1944, he participated in the campaign of Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Theater Ribbons with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct and Victory medals. He resumed his career with Southern Railway which eventually led him to Atlanta. In 1963 he was appointed manager of the Atlanta Terminal Company which operated the Atlanta Terminal Station, which closed in 1971. The Richard B. Russell Building now stands on that spot. He was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, Battle Hill Masonic Lodge, and the Inman Lunch Bunch. Memorial services were at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Manning Finnell, who was a cheerleader when they attended Dixie High School together, they were married 63 years; children, Betsy, and Robert; grandchildren, Kirt, Masie, and Elissa; and sisters, Ruth Casnellie, Fort Wright, Ky., and Stella Lawrence, Palm Beach, Calif. Memorial donations may be given to the First United Methodist Church, 175 East Lanier Ave., Fayetteville, GA 30214-1659. Metro Crematory, Peachtree City, was in charge.
