Union City nixes splitMon, 11/21/2005 - 1:13pm
By: Ben Nelms
Two cities in Southwest Fulton have said no to a proposed plan to split up Fulton County. Coming on the heels of an Oct. 24 resolution by the Fairburn City Council opposing the creation of Milton and Atlanta counties was a similar resolution approved Nov. 15 by Union City council members in opposition to breaking Fulton into several smaller counties. Resolution 2005-13 states that the city is committed to the continued existence of Fulton County in its current geographical, cultural and commercial state, a community committed to working and living together both now and in the future. The Union City resolution acknowledged recent discussions that would split Fulton County’s existing geographical boundaries into several unnamed smaller counties. Such a split would destroy the very fabric of the many communities which have enjoyed the way of life that accompanies their existence within Fulton County. As such, the resolution said, the council must oppose any suggestion to cause Fulton county to be splintered into several smaller units of county government. Related to a possible break up, a town hall meeting hosted by Fulton County Commissioner Bill Edwards to address “The Future of South Fulton” will be held Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park. Talk of a possible break up of Fulton gained steam after the June vote that successfully led to the incorporation of the city of Sandy Springs in North Fulton. A move now being studied by the Senate Atlanta County and Milton County Study Committee, created through Senate Resolution 376, is considering alternatives to Fulton’s geographical boundaries. Though SR 376 makes no direct mention of it, the question of the fate of Fulton County’s current municipalities if the plan were to gel remains unknown. Similarly, the fate of unincorporated South Fulton hangs in the balance, up for possible consolidation with the City of Atlanta. Three of the four state Senators sponsoring SR 376 represent constituents in north Fulton, north DeKalb and east Cobb counties. The City of East Point previously adopted a similar resolution. login to post comments |
