The town of Tyrone moved forward on two sewer contacts Thursday night, that could signal a decrease in rates for its sewer customers.

The first contract is a restructuring of the current contract with Fairburn that allows Tyrone to purchase 250,000 gallons a day from the south Fulton city. Town manager Barry Amos said the major benefit is reducing the debt owed to Fairburn. Originally, the town was to pay Fairburn more than $2.2 million towards building a new sewer plant. But since Fairburn decided not to build a new plant, the town’s indebtedness dropped to $1.2 million for the purchase of the sewer capacity.

Amos said the new contract will further drop the money owed to $719,000. which has to be paid back over a five year period.

The second contract ratified is between the Fayette County School System and tyrone. The school system will hand over management of the Jenkins Road facility, which provides sewer to the three schools. The system will also build a pump station and sewer lines. The town will pick up approximately 45,000 gallons a day from the school system, which should help let the town reduce its rates for existing customers.

“The rates were projected on 250,000 gallons a day capacity. On an annual basis, we’re using about 79,000 gallons a day,”Amos added.

The rest of the capacity is for projects that will soon be built, including John Wieland’s new project on Ga. Highway 74.

“I think both of these contracts are winners for taxpayers in Tyrone and Fairburn,” Amos said.

The contracts will now head to Fairburn and the board of education for final approval.
