Teams shooting for region wins and momentum in first part of seasonTue, 12/05/2006 - 2:03pm

Many of the local basketball teams played against region opponents over the weekend and the results were mixed. On Friday, McIntosh’s boys (1-3) lost to Banneker 62-58 and on Saturday the Chiefs fell to Hiram 60-55 in overtime. McIntosh led by six points at the half in both games. Scoring leaders through the first four games for the Chiefs are Cameron Rich with 12 points per game, and KC Erickson with 10 points per game. The Lady Chiefs (3-1) defeated Banneker 59-50 with Elyse Chubb scoring 24 points and Erin Justice adding 19. On Saturday, they beat Hiram 43-27. Chubb and Alex Smith both scored 12 points in the win. McIntosh hosted Whitewater last night after the paper went to press. Whitewater’s boys and girls split with Banneker. The Lady Wildcats lost 64-62 and the boys won 49-41. Courtney Walker scored 23 points to lead the scoring for Whitewater, while Lacey McGowan chipped in six points and eight rebounds. In the boys game, Jay Bright scored 11 points and Stephen Sargent had 10 rebounds and eight blocks. In non-region games for local teams, the Starr’s Mill Panthers (0-6) lost to Pope 59-33, while the girls team (2-4) lost 67-60. The boys were led in scoring by Colin Elias with 11 points, while Tanner Carson led the team in rebounding with eight rebounds. Starr’s Mill will host McIntosh on Friday. Sandy Creek’s Lady Patriots (4-0) defeated East Coweta 61-29 on Friday and followed it up with a 53-33 win over Newnan on Saturday. Jenna Jackson scored 15 points and had five steals and Lynsey Paschal added 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals in the East Coweta game. Against Newnan, Jackson scored 21 points and Kenneshia Rich had five assits and nine steals. The boys (2-2) lost to East Coweta 64-59 on Friday and beat Newnan 70-59 on Saturday behind 25 points from Blake Brewer. Sandy Creek hosted Chapel Hill last night. Landmark Christian and Our Lady of Mercy both played teams from region 5-A and opponents from outside the region over the weekend. The Landmark boys (1-4) were swept by Southwest Atlanta Christian and Darlington losing 75-39 and 76-39 respectively. The Lady War Eagles (5-1) lost to Southwest Atlanta Christian 58-50. They enetered the fourth quarter leading by a point but couldn’t hang on. Christian Hunnicutt scored 19 points and had seven rebounds, Diamond Hunnicutt had 10 points and eight rebounds and Tiffany Hall scored 12 points and had six steals in the loss. Against Darlington, Landmark won 62-38. The Hunnicutt sisters both scored 21 points and pulled in a total of 18 rebounds while recording 14 steals. Landmark played at Mt. Pisgah last night. Our Lady of Mercy’s boys (3-2) swept Pike County and Atlanta International over the weekend. They beat Pike County 90-80 with Nnamdi Moh scoring 26, Robert Caruso adding 14 and Chris Gair and Buck Caldwell scoring 14 and 12 points respectively. On Saturday, they defeated Atlanta International 45-43 with Caruso scoring 14 and Moh adding nine. The Lady Bobcats (2-3) split, losing to Pike County 56-50 but defeating Atlanta International 53-39. Our Lady of Mercy will play at Mt. Paran on Friday. login to post comments |
