The high school basketball season is well underway in the state and once again, Fayette County schools will be playing in some very competitive regions. The Whitewater Wildcats will be the first team featured in what I hope will become a series of reports of the local hardwoods. No order of preference, Coach Brent Jackson was the first local coach to respond to my inquiry.

Coach Jackson enforces “Teamwork” as the way the team does business, no superstars just an overall effort by all. This philosophy applies to all, 9th grade through Varsity. The Wildcats hope to be in a position to make the post-season and run for the state title, but the Coach states that in order to do so the team must play with heart and emotion throughout the whole game. This applies to boys and girls, all grades.

Coaching Staff
Head Coach - Brent Jackson
Assistant Coaches – Noah Chalkley, Brad Barnard and Ben Thacker.

Expectations
The Wildcats intend to improve as the season progresses in order to remain competitive in a region loaded wit established basketball programs such as Westlake, Banneker, Fayette County, McIntosh and Creekside. The key for the Wildcats will be to improve on the defensive side of the ball.

Players to watch
Stephen Sargent - 6’10 center (SR), rebounder and blocker.
Jay Bright – 6’2 guard (SR), leading scorer of the team, captain, excellent defender and trying to become the first 1000 point scorer for the school.
Zach Scurry – 6’5 guard (SR), strong around the basket and excellent rebounder.
Grant Mannion – 6’4 guard (SR), best 3 point shooter on the team and penetrates well.
Kevin Lewallen – 5’9 guard (SR), 4 year starter, runs the offense, team captain.

College prospects
Sargent has signed with Virginia Military Institute. Bright, Scurry, Mannion, and 6'7 junior post player Jordan Springer could very well be playing at the next level at this time next year.
