Union City Police are set to begin issuing tickets to speeders along the newly annexed portions of the South Fulton Parkway, Ga. Highway 92 and other recently annexed roadways.

The city council Nov. 21 approved an amendment to the city’s speed detection ordinance giving officers the ability to use speed detection devices and issue citations. The ordinance required an amendment once the city received approval for speed setting from Georgia Dept. of Transportation, said Assistant Police Chief Chuck Odom. The city has not requested a change in the current 55 mile per hour speed limit along the parkway and Hwy. 92, he said.

Council members Nov. 21 also approved a request to close and gate the unpaved portion of the newly annexed Thompson Road situated north of South Fulton Parkway. The move comes at the owners expense.

The approval came at the owners request due to ongoing construction of the new Publix and Home Depot stores at the intersection of Thompson Road and Hwy. 92. The request came after concerns about the potential for trespassing, hunting, fishing and dumping illegal garbage and construction debris on the property.
