Rivals, region foes and local teams faced off on Tuesday

Tuesday night saw a number of local basketball teams face off against each other, some counting in region play and others not.

Sandy Creek and East Coweta faced off on Tuesday and will meet again tonight at Sandy Creek. The Patriots’ boys and girls teams won the games on Tuesday with the boys winning 81-66 and the girls winning 63-42. Sandy Creek’s boys had a 42-27 edge at the half but both teams scored 39 points in the second half to keep the 15 point margin between the two teams. Kendrick Hughley Brown led the Indians with 20 points. Blake Brewer scored 22 for Sandy Creek, while Philip Woo added 17.

The Lady Patriots once again dominated an opponent defensively in the second half. In this game the Lady Indians had cut the lead to seven in the third quarter but Sandy Creek only allowed three points in the fourth quarter and got the win. Sandy Creek’s Jenna Jackson scored 28 points and pulled in eight rebounds while recording six steals, while Lynsey Paschal added 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. LaBritanny Stokes scored 18 points for East Coweta.

Those games did not count in region records as the two teams are in different classifications. Neither did Whitewater’s losses to Alexander. The boys lost 75-68 with Grant Mannion scoring 15 points for the Wildcats. The girls lost 69-48. Whitewater will play at Banneker on Saturday night with games beginning at 6 p.m.

In the biggest rivalry game on Tuesday, Fayette County swept McIntosh. The girls game was close at the half with the Lady Tigers leading 21-18 but they tightened their defense and won 43-26. Tessah Holt led Fayette County with 15 points. The Fayette County boys won 61-52. They had a 30-12 lead at the half but McIntosh’s comeback came up short. Cameron Rich led all scorers with 21 points, while David Millaud led Fayette County with 15 points. McIntosh will play at Banneker tonight with games starting at 6 p.m. Fayette County will be off until Tuesday when they host Woodward Academy.

Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls met new region foe Banneker on Tuesday and split. The Lady Panthers won 45-39 with Alexis Shaffer leading the way with 17 points. It was the second straight win for the girls. The boys remained winless on the season with a 62-45 loss to the Trojans. Starrr’s Mill’s game with Whitewater on Friday was postponed to Jan. 6 due to to the Starr’s Mill playoff football game. They will host Pope on Saturday.

Northgate’s boys and girls split with region opponent Creekside. The Lady Vikings won 43-38 with 11 points from Erika Albers, while the boys lost 57-32. Alex Hammond led the Vikings in scoring with 12 points.

In region 5-A action on Tuesday, Landmark Christian split with Providence Christian. The boys lost 61-43, while the Lady War eagles, still undefeated, won 51-26. Christian Hunnicutt led the team in scoring with 20 points seven rebounds and four steals and her sister, Diamond, chipped in 10 points and 13 rebounds. Landmark will play at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy tonight with games beginning at 6 p.m.

Our Lady of Mercy got swept by Whitefield Academy. The boys lost 69-27 and the girls lost 60-38. Kelly Tolcher led the girls in scoring with 13 points. Our Lady of Mercy will play at Pike County tonight with games starting at 6 p.m.
