There will no special election to fill the unexpired term of former school board chairman Mitch Powell.

Instead, the board will appoint someone from Powell’s 5th District to fill the last two years of his term. Powell succumbed to lung cancer earlier this month, and Coweta County school officials have been researching the method to replace him on the board.

School spokesperson Dean Jackson said attorney Joe McNabb said the system is bound by its 1968 by-laws. In 1968, the Coweta County School system was created after it merged with the Newnan City School System. According to the by-laws, any vacancy must be filled by an appointment voted on by the school board members.

Jackson said the board members have not set a timeline for filling the position, but would have to make the appointment at a called session of the board.

In the interim, vice-chairman Smith Pass will preside at the Dec.12 meeting, since Powell also served as chairman.
