Mary Louise Floyd

Atlanta author Mary Louise Floyd will visit the Fayette County Public Library Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. to talk about her book, “Retired With Husband: Superwoman’s New Challenge.” The book speaks particularly to couples from the first wave of the Baby Boom generation, who are now entering-or thinking about entering-retirement. However, anyone from the Baby Boom on down can find food for thought in Floyd’s approach. She identifies challenges, lays out strategies, and uses the multiple-intelligences paradigm, role-playing, humor and other means to motivate both husband and wife to plan on making the most of their life as a retired couple.

Juggling marriage, motherhood, home management and a career became second nature to a whole generation of Baby Boom “superwomen.” The skills they have honed will be put to exciting new uses as millions of boomers in “partnership marriages” redefine retirement in the twenty-first century. The book mixes tongue-in-cheek humor with bona fide strategies for achieving ten objectives, four goals, and a far-reaching vision statement. Animated with enlightening (and comfortingly familiar) facts about the Baby Boom generation’s childhood and first adulthood, “Retired With Husband” delivers a strategic plan for entering the next phase.

Mary Louise Floyd writes from her own experience as a wife, mother, homemaker, educator, speaker and civic activist. A retired boomer, Floyd has been married to her husband, Ed, for 28 years. Their son, Spencer, a recent college graduate, is what Floyd describes as an “archetypal Gen-Xer.” Prior to her retirement in 1999, Floyd worked as a successful educator for more than 30 years, serving as a high school English teacher and a library media specialist. Since her retirement, Floyd has remained active by immersing herself in community service. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Keep Atlanta Beautiful and on the Members Guild for the Atlanta Historical Society. An empty-nested mother and incurable superwoman, Floyd lives and continues to grow with her retired, corporate-attorney husband in Atlanta, Ga.

After speaking, Mary Louise Floyd will sign copies of “Retired With Husband,” which will be available for sale. Light refreshments will be served. This free event is open to the public, and brought to you by the Fayette County Public Library and the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library.

The Fayette County Public Library is located at 1821 Heritage Park Way in Fayetteville, behind the county administrative complex at the corner of Highways 85 and 54. For more information, please contact the library at 770-461-8841.
