One vote.

For apathetic voters who say their vote doesn’t count, last Tuesday’s election in Senoia proved them wrong.

The Coweta County Board of Elections conducted a recount this work and confirmed that incumbent City Councilman Larry Owens had defeated incumbent Councilman Tony Miller for a spot on the new City Council that gets sworn in this January.

In the three person race for two seats, political newcomer Keith Harrison garnered 299 votes, while Owens received 209 votes and Miller received 208 votes. There was also one write-in vote.

When the votes were announced last week, Owens immediately asked for a recount, despite his apparent victory.

“It’s the only fair thing to do,” he said.

With the election results now settled, the makeup of the City Council for 2006 is now complete. New mayor Robert Belisle will lead the helm with two political veterans, Bill Wood and Owens, along with newcomers Harrison and Perry Benson.

During the campaign, Belisle emphasized bringing honesty and ethics back to Senoia, along with carefully managing the city’s growth. Both Harrison and Benson emphasized that the city needs to be cleaned up and made drug-free, along with redeveloping the city’s downtown.
