St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Sharpsburg will begin the Christian seaseon of Advent with an Advent penance service on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m.

The service will be held next door to the Catholic parish’s facility in the sanctuary of Coke’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Visiting priests from area parishes will hear confessions. During Advent, a special 9 a.m. Mass will be celebrated each Friday in the parish chapel.

Advent for Christians officially begins Sunday, Dec. 3 and is a four-week time of preparation and anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day.

At St. Mary’s, candles on the traditional Advent wreath will be lit each week by a different parish family.
