Kiwanis sponsors local DARE program

According to Tom Beckham, President of the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City, sponsorship of the D.A.R.E. Program in Peachtree City's elementary schools is one of the most important and rewarding community service projects undertaken by the club.  The DARE Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is conducted by specially trained officers of the Peachtree City Police Department in six area elementary schools. It consists of a series of classroom lessons that teach children how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. Approximately 600 Peachtree City fifth graders receive the 10-week course. The program is so important that it is being expanded on a limited basis to first and third graders. Kiwanis has sponsored this program for over 10 years. Presenting a check for $4,400 to Corporal Paul Smiley, D.A.R.E. coordinator, is Cliff Schmidt (c), Kiwanis Youth Services chair and Tom Beckham, club president. Photo/Special.
