Starr’s Mill starts season with wins

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers started the 2005-2006 season on the right foot by defeating Woodward Academy 46-45. Outscored 17-4 in the first quarter, the Lady Panthers caught fire. Kirstin Massman hit two big thre pointers in the second, sparking a rally, and the Starr’s Mill defense tightened up, holding Woodward to six points in the third quarter. Emily Woodward hit a shot at the buzzer ending the third quarter to give the Lady Panthers their first lead. Katie Jacobsen hit two three pointers in a row in the fourth and Starr’s Mill handled the ball well and hung on for the win.

Massmann finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Jacobsen finished with 10 points. Meredith Lytle had six points and five rebounds, Lauren Stone added six points and four rebounds and Emily Woodward added four assists and five rebounds.

The Starr’s Mill boys defeated Woodward Academy 55-33. Trailing 10-6 after the first quarter and only building a four point lead by the half, the Panthers turned it on in the third quarter, scoring 21 points, which was their first half total, and limiting Woodward to five points. The fourth quarter was much tighter with Starr’s Mill winning the quarter 13-11.

Mark Harris led all scorers with 24 points, while Bo Tiller added 17 points and 12 rebounds and Spencer Shelton added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Starr’s Mill will host Eagle’s Landing on Saturday with games beginning at 6 p.m.
