Stephen Sargent has always been a big man on campus. Standing at close to 7’ tall it is hard not to be. A large crowd turned out to see Whitewater’s center sign the first letter of intent to attend and play a sport for a college last Wednesday when Sargent signed with Virginia Military Institute.

Sargent has long made it known that he plans to pursue a military career after college and while it isn’t required by VMI, he will go to the Army after school is done. A number of other colleges expressed interest in Sargent, including West Point, The Citadel and Liberty, but Sargent chose to attend VMI, the oldest state supported military college in the nation, and become a member of the Keydet basketball team.

Now that the choosing of a college is over, Sargent can focus on what will likely be an exciting senior season.

The region is full of local rivalries as both Starr’s Mill and Fayette County have joined the region, which includes McIntosh, Woodward Academy, Northgate, Westlake and Banneker. Sargent gained 35 pounds since last season and attended a big man camp with teammate Zach Scurry.

The Wildcats will face East Coweta in an exhibition game tomorrow and will start the season next Monday in the Heritage Bank Tipoff tournament at Union Grove High School. Their first opponent is Peachtree Ridge at 7 p.m.
