Landmark students take to the stage this weekend

The Fantasticks

The Company players of Landmark Christian School present the sweet, but painful tale, of innocence and its loss in their fall production of “The Fantasticks” this weekend.

This musical, with lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, is the longest running show on Broadway and for good reason: swordplay, romance, a plot to deceive and beautiful songs like "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain" and "They Were You" make the production entertaining no matter your age or gender.

In Landmark's production, the roles of the falsely feuding fathers have been transformed to become two mock-maligning mothers.  These conniving parents, played by seniors Mallory Tarter and Heather Utt, pretend to feud as a ploy to draw their children to one another, believing that all children wish for what their parents have said "no" to.

The children, Matt and Luisa, played by junior Zack Speir and senior Katie Parker, are young romantics who have secretly fallen in love, despite the long-standing feud between their mothers.

The narrator/bandit El Gallo, played by senior Thomas Ryden, deepens the plot by offering to stage an abduction from which Matt can rescue Luisa, providing reason for Luisa to fall in love with Matt as her hero and the parents an excuse to end their fake feud.

The abduction is given flair by a sorry troupe of dramatic actors, senior Brad Eisenburg and junior Alek Pike, as the mute, El Gallo's silent assistant, freshman Ashley Berry, helps set the scene for the action.

The mothers' hope is that the abduction will result in a happy-ever-after ending for their children and the two families. But, will it?

As the saying goes, “It’s a tangled web that we weave when first we set out to deceive.”

Head out to the show to find out how the story ends and expect to be delighted by “The Fantasticks.”

Landmark Christian School’s production of “The Fantasticks” will show Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 4th at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at Landmark's Peachtree City campus fine arts auditorium, 777 Robinson Road, Peachtree City. Tickets are $10 general admission at the door.
