Out of respect for ‘Dan, Dar and Phil,’ voters should show up for runoff

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005. We are fortunate in Peachtree City to have a runoff election between Harold Logsdon and Brown.

Eighty percent of those voting in the general election Nov. 8 voted against Brown. Harold Logsdon had twice as many votes as Brown.

Due to the fact that there were three other formidable candidates for the office of mayor, we should feel excited about the opportunity to go to the voting polls once again.

The three most important voices, which need to be heard from before the Dec. 6 runoff, are those of Phil Boswell, Dan Tennant, and Dar Thompson. All three gained strong support against Brown, and they deserve to be heard from and taken seriously.

Four years ago, in the runoff election for mayor that produced the infamous Brown years, voter turnout at the polls was dismal. Supporters of the candidates who failed in the general election themselves failed to show up a month later to exercise their right.

Out of respect for Dan, Dar, and Phil, let’s show our appreciation to them for the courageous way they volunteered to serve the Peachtree City community. Thompson, Tennant, and Boswell support in the general election garnered enough votes collectively to crush Brown. Harold Logsdon’s support alone crushed Brown. Will this commendable effort to turn out for the general election have been in vain?

You may ask why I feel we are fortunate to have this upcoming runoff election. You may wonder why I think we should be excited about being given another opportunity to express our opinion at the polls. It’s because the problem has now become isolated and our mission statement has become clear.

Losing 80 percent of the popular vote and losing to the top vote getter by two-to-one has given Brown an opportunity to prey on registered voters’ usual apathy towards runoff elections.

We should be jubilant to get out to vote one more time Tuesday, Dec. 6. It’s the greatest opportunity to give Brown a clear and unequivocal exit strategy. It’s a classy way for the supporters of Dar Thompson, Phil Boswell, and Dan Tennant to show their respect and appreciation to them for the effort they made on our behalf.

Lastly, like any persistent weed growing the garden, it’s always advisable to apply one extra treatment of weed killer. Let’s be excited for the opportunity to get to vote one more time Dec. 6. Consider it the last requisite treatment to “eradicate the Brown-Rapson weed.” We can then look forward to next spring when the once beautiful garden of Peachtree City will be in bloom again.
