The Fred Breast Cancer auction

The Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater raised over $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at their annual benefit auction held Sept. 22 and 23 before the REO Speedwagon concerts.

“We are so proud of our sponsors and patrons for raising such a significant amount of money,” said Lauren Yawn, executive director for the Peachtree City Tourism Association. “It is great to see the community step forward and support our auction for the Komen Foundation.”

Yawn chose the Susan G. Komen Foundation as the recipient of the auction proceeds because she knows many people affected by breast cancer. “There have been many strong women in our community that have been diagnosed with this terrible disease,” said Yawn. “Most people know someone who have been affected by breast cancer.”

According to the Georgia Department of Human Resources, the breast cancer incidence rate for females in Peachtree City, average annual age-adjusted rate is 126.7 per 100,000, is similar to that for Georgia females, 124.3 per 100,000. There are about three deaths due to breast cancer every year among women in Peachtree City. There were approximately 20,000 cases of cancer incidence in Georgia between 1999 and 2002.

To support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, autographed paraphernalia from bands that performed during the summer and items donated by sponsors and community businesses were auctioned off to concert goers. A silent auction was held both nights before the concert from 6:30 p.m. until 8:45 p.m., and a live auction was held at 8:30 p.m.

The auction featured packages including a vacation get-a-way to Panama City, Fla., a suite for 12 to an Atlanta Thrashers game, Braves tickets, autographed pictures and CDs, an MP3 player, autographed guitars, a picnic table to the Swingin’ Medallions concert and catered dinner and many other items.

The REO Speedwagon concert closed out the summer concert series.
