Students, parents and faculty of Peachtree City Elementary are making a list and checking it twice as they prepare for the 10th annual Jingle Bell Trail set for December 9. Last year it drew more than 1,000 runners and generated nearly $9,000, which helped purchase new classroom computers.

This year race organizers expect more than 800 kids and adults to come to the school, strap jingle bells on their shoes and dash down the city’s famous golf cart paths in either the certified 5-Kilometer run or the more leisurely 1-mile run/walk.

This event is designed to boost community spirit, promote wellness and raise money to support the school’s student improvement focus.

“Students participate in our school running club to get ready for the Jingle Bell Trail and look forward to this fun holiday event each year,” says physical education teacher Beverly Kiel.

Race organizers promise a festive atmosphere with volunteers bedecked in bright red Santa hats and merry holiday music piped in at the finish line.

“The children like the Santa Claus cheering for them and the jingle bells on the shoes,” says Sarah Dwyer, a parent at the school.

School staff has begun contacting local companies to solicit support for this year’s race. Sponsors are assured broad public recognition including having their name emblazoned on the long-sleeve T-shirts that will be awarded to every race participant.

Applications to enter the Jingle Bell Trail are available in the school’s front office, online at www.pces.org and will be distributed soon at locations throughout Fayette County. The entry fee is $15 before November 29 and $20 after that date. Applications will be accepted until the morning of the race although T-shirts are not guaranteed for race day entries.

The top three male and female winners in each age bracket of the fun run will receive special awards. All participants will receive a distinctive 2006 race shirt. Runners and walkers also will enjoy free post-race refreshments including fresh fruit and water.

The 5-K run will begin in front of the school at 9 a.m. while the 1-mile walk/run will start 10 minutes later. Participants are urged to arrive at the school, located at 201 Wisdom Road, at least 45 minutes early to allow time to park, warm up and lace on jingle bells.
