Members of Bethany United Methodist Church in north Fayette County will offer their famous Perlieu Stew dinner this Saturday, Nov. 4, from 1 p.m. until all stew is sold out.

Plates for adults will be $6 and plates for children will cost $4.

The annual event has been a tradition since 1908, when a group of men from the church got together by the lake at Favor’s Mill (later Lee’s Mill) after a day of hunting and used their game in a homemade stew.

The original cook was Will Young, assisted by Glen Swanson, Judge Braswell, Gene McLarin, Dad Driggers, Will Walker, and the Harris brothers, John, Goode and Ed.

The men continued their fall stew cooking for many years until their wives, women of Bethany church, decided to make the stew and sell it to raise money for church projects. And thus began the tradition.

Chicken has now been substituted for rabbit and other game, but the other ingredients — potatoes, onions, corn, tomatoes, rice and butter — remain the same.

The stew is served with pickle chips, potato chips, bread and homemade cake and coffee.

The stew is always sold out and those wishing to purchase a plate are advised to arrive early.

Bethany is on the corner of Lee’s Lake and Milam/Rivers roads in north Fayette County. For more information, call the church, 770-964-6999 or 770-964-6992.
