They have given so much to the community. Perhaps it is time for the community to help them. Members of Palmetto Seniors Center have their hearts set on building a Memorial Garden at the center on Turner Avenue. A Fall Festival and Hobo Supper fundraising event for the project will be held at the center Nov. 3 from 5-8 PM to help raise needed funds. Famous in the south Fulton area for their expertise in quilt-making, the seniors have long assisted others in fundraising efforts. “The quilters have helped raise $9,000 for other purposes, helping with medical expenses for other families,” said center Director Patty O’Bryen. O’Bryen said seniors have already raised $3,000 from quilt raffles but need an additional $25,000 to complete the Memorial Garden, designed to be a “living memorial” to those who have gone on before us. The garden will encompass most of the backyard area behind the senior’s center. It will include walkways, a gazebo and benches, stepping stones and other features designed to make the area a special place where the memories of others will live on. “This is something the seniors want to do,” O’Bryen explained. “When it’s finished it will be like a dream come true.” The Fall Festival and Hobo Supper will include entertainment, cake walks, a silent auction, crafts, homemade pepper sauce and other goodies for sale. Seniors will sell raffle tickets for a “Maple Leaf” quilt that was pieced and quilted by senior center quilters. Tickets for the event are $5 for adults, $2.50 for grades K-5. There will be no charge for children under age 4. A special account for donations has been set up at RBC Centura Bank in Palmetto. Checks should be made payable to the Palmetto Senior Center Memorial Garden Fund. An architectural rendering for the Memorial Garden is on display at the center, located at 510 Turner Avenue. O’Bryen can be contacted at (770) 463-4990. login to post comments |
