The Peachtree City Council will consider adopting a new federal protocol for handing significant public safety emergencies at its meeting Thursday night.

Adoption of the National Incident Management System is a federal mandate, and if it’s not adopted the city could lose federal and state funding.

The system was developed by the federal Homeland Security Department. It includes various training courses aimed at entry-level public safety employees to those at the management level. Politicians are also encouraged to take the training, which is available through an online course.

In other business on a relatively light agenda, council will consider approving an agreement to modernize the county’s Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is performing the work, but the agreement calls for the city to share certain information and adopt the new map and possibly amend or update local floodplain management ordinances as needed.
