State softball tournaments start Friday

Five local teams have made the state softball playoffs in their respective classifications. They all begin their quest for a state title on Friday and many of the games are close to home.

Class AAAA - Lovejoy Regional Park, Hampton, Ga.

Starr’s Mill (25-10-1) vs. Evans (21-10), 4 p.m.
The Lady Panthers lost the region championship to the Northgate Lady Vikings, while Evans lost to Greenbrier and Lakeside, Evans in the region tournament. Evans has held opponents to one run or less in 12 of their wins this season. The winner of this game will take on the winner of Lee County and Stockbridge game at 8 p.m.

Whitewater (22-11) vs. Lakeside, Evans (17-14), 4 p.m.
The Whitewater Lady Wildcats went 3-2 in the region tournament with their two losses being one run losses to Starr’s Mill and Northgate. Whitewater has posted 13 shutouts this season. Lakeside, Evans made the region final and lost to Greenbrier, 3-0. Thirteen of their wins were by five runs or more. The winner of this game will take on the winner of Dutchtown/Americus-Sumter at 8 p.m.

McIntosh (14-10) vs. Greenbrier (28-6), 6 p.m.
The Lady Chiefs got wins over Fayette County and Woodward Academy in the region tournament but fell to Starr’s Mill 5-1. Greenbrier won their 11th straight region championship last week. They are ranked sixth in the state in a recent GaSports.com poll and have won 12 games in a row heading into this game. The winner of this game will take on the winner of Griffin/Bainbridge at 8 p.m.

Class AAA, Lovejoy Regional Park, Hampton

Sandy Creek (19-12-1) vs. West Hall (18-19)
The Lady Patriots went 2-2 in the region tournament and posted nine shutouts this season. West Hall had a five game losing streak in August but won four of their last six games heading into the state tournament. The winner of this game will take on the winner of Oconee County and Dunwoody at 8 p.m.

Class A, Heritage Point, Dalton, Ga.
Landmark Christian (11-13) vs. Social Circle (9-15), 6 p.m.
The Lady War Eagles started the season with a 2-8 record but finished the season on a better note. They also posted five shutouts along the way. Social Circle has been shutout six times. The winner of this game will meet the winner of Georgia Military/Bowdon at 8 p.m.
