When it comes to playoff drama, perhaps none could top the Whitewater-McIntosh duel in the first round of tournament play Monday afternoon. The teams shut each other out for six innings but Whitewater rallied in the seventh with a leadoff triple from McKenzie Woody. The Lady Chiefs managed to get two outs, on the verge of preserving the tie, but Woody had other plans. She broke from third base and successfully stole home, scoring the winning run. Ashley Pederson recorded 13 strikeouts in the victory. Previously the Lady Wildcats beat Westlake 15-0, with Whitney Toler recording the win with five punchouts. The Starr’s Mill squad had some drama of its own in its second game Monday, getting a no-hitter from Paige Peurifoy to beat Fayette County 4-1. Peurifoy dominated the contest, striking out 15 and walking only one. For the Lady Panthers, Jordan Aszman went 3 for 3 and scored a run, and Chelsey Savage chipped in an RBI double. The victory set up another playoff game against a county rival, as Whitewater faced Starr’s Mill Tuesday night after the newspaper went to press. Prior to the win over Fayette County, Starr’s Mill beat Creekside 16-0 with two hits each from Candace Joyner, Karlie Bureau and Julie Huddleston. login to post comments |
