A Starr’s Mill High student will have a hand in advising State School Superintendent Kathy Cox about matters impacting the state’s educational system.

Matthew Quandt, a 10th grader, is one of 52 members of the 2006-2007 Student Advisory Council that is made up of high school students representing school systems around the state. Members of the council advise the superintendent on policy issues and provide input on how state policy is having an impact in the classroom. The members also serve as ambassadors for the Georgia Department of Education in their schools.

Members for the committee are selected through an application process that includes biographical information and essay questions. Matthew’s application was chosen from among the 640 received this year. He is the only student from Fayette serving on the council.

The first meeting of the Student Advisory Council will be held October 16 at Mercer University in Macon. The council will meet three more times during the year.
