Soldiers honored at cemetery

Members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Sons of Union Veterans honored their ancestors at a grave marker dedication ceremony.

Held at the Shadnor First Baptist Church cemetery, Union City, nearly 100 interested persons, reenactors and historians participated.

Speakers for the first-time occasion were Charlie Lott, Commander, Georgia Sons of Confederate Veterans, and Nancy J. Cornell, president of the Old Campbell County Historical Society and author of many books and articles on the area.

"I am a historian because I am concerned with preserving all of the facets of Campbell County. If I do my part, maybe others will, too, and very little will be forgotten.

"Nothing is ended until it is forgotten," she said. "That which is held in memory still endures and is real."

Commander Charles Garvin, SCV Camp 1289 Gen. James Longstreet, gave the roll call of those Confederate soldiers who gravestone were specifically marked.

This included 17 names that were known, 18 Confederate soldiers whose names are not known, and three Union soldiers whose names are not known.

Shadnor First Baptist Church was begun in the year 1840 and is located on Westbrook Street, Union City.
