It’s fall in Fayette County and that means it’s time for the annual Kiwanis fair! This weekend brings the 55th annual Fayette County Kiwanis Fair to town.

This is the second year the fair will include two weekends and the first year that the fair will be open on a Sunday. The fair, which opened on October 5 and will close October 14, will once again be held at the Kiwanis Fair Complex located at 939 Goza Road in Fayetteville.

Although the Kiwanis Club sold the fairgrounds to the Fayette County Board of Education this year, patrons who look forward to the fair each year should not be concerned about it disappearing. “Our present plans call for the fair running every year indefinitely,” said fair coordinator Geneva Weaver.

As always, the Kiwanis Club is focusing on the Fayette County community by planning a fair that will cater to the approximately 30,000 attendees who will come from Fayette County as well as the surrounding region.

While keeping the traditional fair favorites such as the Chili Cook-off, fair goers can also expect a few new things. “We have a new mid-way person this year,” stated Weaver. All rides will be provided by Jules-Beck out of Barnesville. “They have a lot of beautiful, new rides and great concessions,” remarked Weaver. The concessions include fresh-squeezed lemonade, she added.

Student nights will be held Tuesday, Oct. 10 and Thursday, Oct. 12. The Chili Cook-off will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4:30 p.m. The first prize winner will take home $100, second place will win $50 and third place will win $25.

The Kiwanis Club of Fayette County was founded on September 21, 1951. Over fifty years ago, members began the tradition of hosting special events such as the fair and contributing funds raised to charitable organizations and the Fayette County community.

“All proceeds from the Fayette County Fair are donated back to the community. This is our only major fund raiser of the year,” said Weaver. “Each year we support organizations such as the Fayette County Board of Education, DFACS, DART, the Alzheimer’s Association, March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society.”

Fair hours are Monday-Friday, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., except Thursday, Oct. 12 when the fair will open at 7 p.m., Saturdays 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Gate admission is free for those 4 and under, $2 for those ages 5-11, $5 for those ages 12-64 and $2 for those 65 and up.

Armbands for fair rides will cost $15 each day.
