Peachtree City staff is proposing a slate of actions to handle lake buffer violations along the eastern side of Lake Peachtree.

The proposal will be considered Thursday night by the City Council during its regular meeting at 7 p.m.

The recommendations include grandfathering violations of the 100-foot watershed protection buffer and the 150-foot impervious surface setback if those lines aren’t platted on the individual lot in question. Also, staff will work with the homeowners association to develop rules for lake recreation usage which would later be written into a city ordinance.

Staff is also proposing to create a permit for buffer encroachments and developing an educational program on buffer requirements. Also under consideration is a move to conduct lot by lot inspections to determine violations, with property owners notified of violations in writing and a 5-10 business-day window to remediate the violations. If the violation goes uncorrected, a 48-hour notice would be issued before the homeowner is cited and required to appear in municipal court.

Council is also slated to consider some minor changes to the city’s detailed sign ordinance. The new version focuses on changes due to recently adopted legislation on the placement and duration of campaign signs, with some additional housekeeping changes, according to a memo from City Planner David Rast.

The current ordinance allows political signs only during a defined timeframe for election season, but that language is deleted from the revised ordinance that is recommended for Council approval.

The ordinance still requires such signs to be no more than 16 square feet in size on residential lots and no more than 32 square feet on all non-residential zoned property. The new version still allows any number of political signs to be erected.
