For some of the local high school football teams, last Friday was a chance to get back on track and they made the most of it. Whitewater bounced back from a loss to Creekside to get a huge win over Westlake, while Starr’s Mill snapped their two game losing streak and handed Banneker a loss. Things didn’t go as well for Fayette County, Landmark Christian, Our Lady of Mercy or Sandy Creek.

The Wildcats beat Westlake’s Lions 17-14, thanks to a field goal from Jordan Cooper. Whitewater also got a touchdown reception from Cody Haralson and Gary Price returned a touchdown for the other Whitewater score. The win was significant because it puts both the Wildcats and Lions at 2-1 in the region and gives Whitewater the edge in head to head play. There is still a lot of season left, with Whitewater playing Starr’s Mill on Oct. 20 and Westlake facing Creekside on Oct. 27, but the Wildcats have to like where they are sitting right now.

Starr’s Mill is now 1-2 in region 2-AAAA after getting a 31-14 win over Banneker on Friday. Jonathan Whitlow kicked four field goals and Robby Davis threw for two touchdowns in the win. Eric Pitts had three catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, Manny Alvarez added a touchdown and Parker duPont rushed for 190 yards. The Panthers will play at McIntosh, which was off last week, this Friday.

Fayette County fell behind Northgate 15-0 and then rallied on the Vikings, only to fall short of a region win. The Tigers once again got a touchdown from Matt Daniels and Barrack Little also scored in the game, but early turnovers and a safety proved costly. Fayette County is off this week and will host Creekside on Oct. 13.

The Landmark War Eagles dropped to 2-2 on the young season after a 35-21 loss to the Bremen Blue Devils. Landmark scored first when senior quarterback Matt Moody hooked up with receiver Matt Thornton on a touchdown pass. Thornton finished with 41 yards on three catches. Senior running back Brian Lee returned from injury giving the War Eagles ground game a spark gaining 56 yards on 12 carries. Moody finished the night with 135 passing yards and 86 rushing yards and added another touchdown on the ground. Landmark special teams were impressive while blocking a punt for a touchdown, recovering an onside kick, and kick returns to nearly midfield, but it wasn’t enough to slow down Bremen, which has now put up 35 points on the War Eagles three years in a row. Landmark travels to Bowdon this Friday night to take on the highly ranked Red Devils.

Our Lady of Mercy put up a lot of yards last week in their game against Mt. Zion, Carroll, 328 total, but they threw three interceptions, and were penalized eight times for 85 yards and lost 33-17. Jarrell Bankhead once again rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown, while William Pearl threw for over a hunred yards and a touchdown to receiver Chris Gair, who also kicked a field goal in the loss. Christian Brow led the defense with 12 tackles and Jay Patterson, Ryan Bowman and Pearl all had six tackles. Bowman blocked an extra point attempt and senior Brett Thomas had an interception. The Bobcats will host Glascock County on Friday.

Things looked great for Sandy Creek at the start of last week’s game against Villa Rica when Josh Holt recovered a Villa Rica fumble just over a minute into the game. Patriot quarterback Jake Turing threw an interception seconds later though and it was clear that the game would be a struggle for both teams. Chris James recovered a fumble in the first quarter that set up a field goal from Kody Green. The score remained at 3-0 until late in the second quarter when Villa Rica scored on a 28 yard touchdown reception. To kick off the second half, Sandy Creek’s Josh Williams ran over 70 yards to set up a three yard touchdown reception from Green. The lead lasted until the fourth quarter when Villa Rica scored on another big play, this time a 72 yard touchdown reception. The Patriots fumbled on their next drive and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown with just over two minutes to go in the game, giving Villa Rica a 21-10 region win.

Sandy Creek will play at Cartersville on Friday night and the game will be televised on Comcast Channel 45 at 7:30 p.m.
