The City of Fairburn lost one of its most well known citizens Sept. 23 with the death of former city Councilman Roy Farr. He served on Fairburn City Council for 36 years, ending his tenure in 2005, and had retired from Green Oil Company.

Mayor Betty Hannah and other council members expressed their condolences at the Sept. 25 council meeting, remembering Farr and his commitment to the city.

“Do you know how much commitment it takes to serve for 36 years?,” Hannah asked with emotion. “He always believed everyone is important. I think we’ll all miss him in the City of Fairburn.”

Council members Scott Vaughan and Mario Avery suggested a public commemoration for Farr and his contributions to the city.

“He was a personal friend of mine and he will be missed,” said Councilman Ron Alderman. “He was a great person. My heart goes out to his family for their loss.”

Farr was survived by Cassie Smith Farr, his wife of 52 years, daughter and son-in-law Jenni and Randy Cunningham of Fairburn, daughter-in-law Connie and Dwayne Strickland of Sharpsburg, grandchildren Joshua Farr and Allison Farr of Sharpsburg and Ryan Cunningham of Fairburn.

Services were held Sept. 25 at First Baptist Church of Fairburn.
