NAACP banquet is Oct.14Tue, 09/26/2006 - 3:30pm

The Fayette County Branch of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will host their Ninth Annual Freedom Fund Banquet October 14 at 7 p.m. at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center. The branch is inviting the community to join them as they salute the accomplishments of distinguished citizens in Fayette County. “The banquet is a celebration of the achievements of this branch and its supporters. We are pledging to continue our commitment to the political, educational, social and economic improvement for all Fayette County citizens,” said Rev. Edward Johnson, President of the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP. This year 11Alive sports anchor, Sam Crenshaw joins the list of notable emcees for the annual banquet. Tiffany Cochran and Lorraine Jock-White have emceed the event in past years. The banquet’s honored guest speaker is the Honorable Justice Harold Melton. Our distinguished Honorable Justice Melton currently serves on the Georgia State Supreme Court. The banquet theme “Voting Our Values/Valuing Our Votes!” will highlight the Black Heritage Stamp Collection presented by the Fayetteville Postal Service. Additionally, the event will also feature live entertainment and auction off the Heavy Weight Champion Evander Holyfield autographed boxing gloves. Since 1998, Fayette County NAACP Branch has worked effortlessly in promoting and implementing programs that enhance the quality of life for everyone in the community. The annual banquet recognizes the service commitment of citizens, students and various organizations in Fayette County. Former Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown, Hank Aaron, Evander Holyfield and Dr. John DeCotis are past Fayette County residents that have been honored at the Freedom Fund Banquet. The Freedom Fund Banquet will acknowledge the success of the Mighty Men of Valor. The one-day conference was held at Sandy Creek High School and attracted over 200 young men between the ages of 13-21. The conference participants were encouraged from various community leaders to seek spirituality versus violence. The branch is also responsible for hosting a political candidate’s forum for the community, annual End of Course Test tutorials in conjunction with the Fayette County Board of Education and, weekly SAT tutorials for high school students. The youth division is also making an impact in the community with the execution of their second annual golf tournament. Tickets for the Freedom Fund Banquet can be purchased for $60.
