L.A. Cavelli

L. A.”Lou” Cavalli, 85, Fayetteville, formerly of East Point, died Sept. 16, 2006. He was born Feb. 10, 1921 in Wilmington, Del., son of Italian immigrants. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Cavalli, Pace, Fla. He worked as a welder in the United States Navy shipyard in World War II. In 1948 he moved his family to East Point. He was involved here in citizen focus groups working on a transportation project that became MARTA. In the 1960s his extended love of sports into part time positions as a reporter of high school games for The Atlanta Journal and The Suburban Reporter. He converted his welding skills into an artistic hobby in the form of ornamental iron pieces including fence gates, tables and lamps. He was retired from the M. E. department at Georgia Tech in 1983. Services were at the Overton Chapel of the First Baptist Church, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Glenn Stringham officiating. Interment was at Holly Hill Memorial Park, Fairburn. Survivors include his wife, the former Minnie Padgett Cavalli, Fayetteville; sons, Fred Cavalli, Decatur, and Jim Cavalli, Fayetteville, eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.
